Grant Tuition Program

The Office of Research is pleased to offer the Grant Tuition Program (GTP) to further the CSU 2.0 priorities of distinguishing CSU as a leading public urban research university and of increasing CSU's research activity. The purpose of the program is to encourage faculty to hire CSU graduate students as research assistants to enhance indirect-generating, externally-funded research programs.

Eligibility & Terms

This program is available to faculty members who receive externally-funded research grants (i.e., funded by federal, state, or private grantors). The GTP will pay for up to 9 credit hours per semester (up to two semesters per academic year) of tuition support (in-state PhD rate) for a student if that student's stipend is paid for by the same grant (see the university's current tuition rates for doctoral students here). The difference between in-state PhD tuition rate and out-of-state or MS tuition rates shall be covered from the grant or from other sources. GTP support is subject for fund availability and is not guaranteed.

All of the following conditions must be met to be eligible for GTP:

  • The external award must generate $25,000 or more of indirect costs per year for each student for whom tuition is requested from the GTP program
  • The external award must pay for a full graduate student stipend (20 hours per week). The stipend amount must adhere to College of Graduate Studies guidelines.
  • Any graduate student supported by GTP must be assigned 100% research responsibilities dedicated to the grant for which GTP support was requested.
  • A GTP-supported student's time cannot be split between a research assistantship and a teaching assistantship; it must be fully research.
  • GTP will provide support for new and existing/active grants, but will not reimburse tuition retroactively.

Graduate Student Health Insurance

Graduate Assistant contracts for doctoral students on a full-time contract (20 hours per week of work) with tuition must also include 70% of the cost of single health insurance coverage in cases where students obtain their student health insurance through the university. See Graduate College Policy here.

GTP covers only tuition; it does not cover the cost of graduate student health insurance.

The PI is responsible for covering at least 70% of the cost of health insurance for GTP -supported students funded by any external grants submitted on or after April 1, 2024. Grants submitted or received prior to April 1, 2024 will be exempted from the new policy: in these cases, 70% of the cost of health insurance for the doctoral students will be covered by the College of Graduate Studies. For Graduate Assistants funded on grants that do not permit coverage of health insurance, 70% of the cost of health insurance for those students will be covered by the College of Graduate Studies. The difference must be covered by other sources such as student, grant, department, college.

Application Procedure

The GTP request form must be submitted every academic year, independently, what is the duration of the grant.

The form must be completed only for the upcoming academic year, for one or two semesters.

The form must be submitted before the start of the semester: August 1 requests for Fall/Spring and December 1 requests for Spring.

Please complete the Grant Tuition Program Form. Email completed forms to Joy Yard (j.yard@csuohio.edu) and Roman Kondratov (r.kondratov@csuohio.edu) in the Office of Research, indicating "GTP" in the subject line.
